Naanga Poi Solla Porom (We are gonna lie!)

It is more than apt to post this during the month of April. This post is dedicated to my undergraduate classmates :)

It should have been September 20, 2008. It was time for yet another treat; this time from myself and another guy to my undergraduate classmates. We love to go to restaurants and hog food but we had done more of that during the previous treats. So we changed our minds to make it different – to watch a movie. The unanimous choice was the movie named ‘Poi Solla Porom’, a Tamil remake of the Hindi movie ‘Khosla la Ghosla’. We decided to follow it up with a snack at Pizza Hut. Did I mention that we love to hog food?

The movie was at 3 in Sangam Cineplex. Constant reminders kept coming to me asking me to start early. Having booked the tickets, only I had the authority to collect the tickets from the window. The theatre is just 20 minutes drive from my home. 2.20 pm was an ideal time to start; in fact, it would have been an early start. Not trusting the day’s traffic, I started from my house at 2.20 pm. Then came the twist of the story :D .

I was supposed to pick up Karthick at his house but he had left to one of his friends’ house. So instead of going towards the theatre, I went in the opposite direction to pick him up. Karthick was on the way towards my home in a bus. A fact worth mentioning about this bus is that not only it is swarmed with a huge crowd but also roams into interior corners of the town and thus makes it slow. I was constantly messaging Karthick asking about his locality. None of the messages came from him as a shocker except for one message, “The movie is at 4 pm, right?”… “Well… looks like the movie title is designed for us from now”.

It was 2:45 pm. Karthick and I were standing near Ashok Nagar. The first message that we sent to our friends, who were already waiting at the theatre is that we are on the way and then we started. Karthick offered to drive fast with me giving directions. Everything went fine until in T.Nagar, the CCTP beckoned us. It was 2:55 pm and the traffic police had decided to make us wait. After paying the duties, I offered, once again, to drive. It was probably a minute or two past 3 and I drove like I never did before. I was constantly getting calls from my classmates and then Karthick responded the calls and also messaged that we were stuck in traffic and also almost there. We reached the theatre at around 3:15 pm and there we saw our classmates, with dull faces, waiting eagerly just like the Lagaan cricket team eagerly waiting for rain in vain.

The first 15 – 20 minutes of the movie didn’t have much story and hence we hadn’t missed much. Also, the rest of the movie happened to be too funny and interesting that all of them decided to forget that we turned up late causing them (and us) to miss the first 20 minutes. Yes, we did go to Pizza Hut (or is it Domino’s?) to spice it up before we called it a day.
